When the flight attendant came back around with dinner, both Natalia and Christian were asleep and cuddled together in their connecting seats. She reached down, gently shaking Christian’s shoulder. She hated waking the women, but it was policy to always wake the sleeping passengers when full meals were being served.

Christian jerked back, holding Natalia protectively as her eyes came into focus on the woman standing a foot away.

“I’m sorry,” the flight attendant said, looking over at Natalia apologetically.

“It’s okay. I forgot I was on a plane apparently,” Christian replied with a half laugh, letting go of the confused woman lying against her. “What are our options?”

“We have chicken or vegetable lo mein, or these are our upgrades. The price is listed next to them,” she said, handing a small laminated sheet to Christian.

Natalia perused the little menu. Their choices were filet mignon or lobster tail with mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables, or linguine with clam sauce and a side of garlic bread.

“Linguine,” both women said at the same time.

Christian pulled enough Yuan from her pocket to pay for the meal and handed it to the flight attendant.

“Upgraded meals take an extra fifteen minutes. They’ll be served as soon as they are ready,” she said before moving on to the next row.

“Is everything okay?” Natalia questioned.

“Yeah. Fine. You?”

“Uh huh.” She nodded, unsure Christian was telling the truth. She was sound asleep until she felt a sudden movement and bear hug that pinned her between the plane’s wall and Christian.

“Four more hours to go,” Christian said, standing to stretch and use the restroom.

“Yep,” Natalia mumbled.

When Christian returned, Natalia was watching another movie. She kept the picture going, and pulled her headphones down. “What are your plans after this?” she asked. “When we part ways.”

Christian hesitated to answer. The truth was, she had no idea. “I don’t know,” she finally said. Generally, she would head back to her home in Paris and do a video call to debrief the mission, on rare occasions she’d go to headquarters in London to do it. Lancelot called the shots. It was his team. She simply did was she was told: keep a low profile and be on the ready. When he called, she did as instructed, no questions asked. She was one of the best operatives he’d ever worked with and she trusted him with her life. “I’ll probably go home,” she added, hoping that was the case.

“To Paris?”

“Yes.”

“I’m sure you don’t have pets with all of the travel you do, but I bet you have a bunch of plants,” Natalia stated.

“Why do you say that?”

Natalia shrugged.

“Do you have plants?”

“Nope. No plants and no pets.”

“Then, why assume what I have?”

“I don’t know. I was making small talk.”

“I don’t like small talk.”

“I’m well aware of that,” Natalia muttered, sorry she’d brought it up. She slipped her headphones back on and focused on the movie playing in front of her.

Christian sighed and reached over, pulling the headphones off of Natalia’s ears. “I used to have a cat. His name is Pierre.
